Social Studies × Social Science
Is there any difference between Social Studies and Social Science? Let's see the definitions for these terms given by various scholars.
In 1952, Arthur.C.Bining and David.H.Bining states, “social studies are adapted from the social sciences in order to play a part –and a very important one-in achieving the purpose or subjective or education. The material of the social studies provide the basis for making the world of today intelligible to the pupils for training them in certain skills and habits and for inculcating attitudes and ideals that will enable boys and girls to take their places as efficient and effective members of a democratic society.”
National Council For The social Studies USA in 1992 stated, "Social Studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence.”
Both social studies and social science deals with the social relationships and functioning of the society. The former studies the society whereas the latter not only study the social values but also inculcate a culture of critically thinking in the students.
Social studies is thought oriented whereas social science is research oriented.
Scope
'Man is a social animal' said Aristotle. Therefore the social changes will change the individuals in the society. Social science should address and analyse those continuous changes. It is the responsibility of a social teacher to build a socially and politically awareness among the youths. Apolitical intellectuals are threat to a democracy.
Why Social Studies should be a core subject in the school?
Social science includes social and political awareness. Studying the pure and applied sciences does not ensure a good human. The role of social science is to develop humanity.
